FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1 - Is it safe for my pet to travel in the ‘cargo hold’ of an aircraft?
Yes, it is safe. The airlines are more careful than ever about the handling and care of ‘live animals’ on their aircraft.
2 - Is the cargo compartment of an aircraft pressurized and heated?
Yes, in 95% of all commercial carrier aircraft the compartment that animals are placed is the same environment as the passenger cabin.
3 - Can I purchase a seat on-board an airline for my pet?
No. This rule is determined by the FAA.
4 - Should I tranquilize or sedate my pet before it travels?
It is not recommended that you offer anything to your pet that might make it have an upset stomach or feel strange. It is best to consult with your veterinarian if you have concerns about your pet’s temperament while traveling.
5 - What kind of container do you recommend I purchase to carry my pet ‘on-board’ an airline?
You will need to be sure that the pet will fit in a container that slides completely under the seat in front of you while on board the aircraft with you. We recommend the small or medium sized Sherpa Bag.
6 - Can I take me dog on a cruise ship?
Some cruise lines will allow “Certified Service Animals” to accompany qualifying passengers on their ships. No ‘pets’ are allowed on most cruise ships.
7 - Can I travel on Amtrak with my pet?
No, they do not allow pets on their trains in the U.S.
8 - Does my dog or cat have to be quarantined if it travels to an international destination?
This depends on the destination and the current regulations of the country you are traveling to with your pet. Be sure and check for the latest information regarding traveling to each country with your pet so there are no surprises on arrival.
9 - Can I track my pet’s travel on the internet?
Yes, if your pet is traveling alone by cargo, tracking numbers are provided by most carriers that allow you to check on their progress via the internet.
10 - Do the airlines really lose a vast amount of pets a year?
We have never had an airline lose one of our pets, nor do we know of one that has been lost. Sometimes they may put it on the later connecting flight. We have no idea where people get that information it is a mystery to us at Puppy Travel.
11 - Is it true that the commercial airlines limit the number of cats and dogs that are allowed to travel ‘on-board’ an aircraft?
Yes, they do limit the number of animals allowed to in the passenger cabin. The numbers vary from airline, aircraft type and cabin. The major reason for this is a concern for allergies of other passengers onboard.
12 - Once airborne can I take my cat or dog out of its container and hold it in my lap?
No, the flight attendants can get grumpy with you if they notice that your pet is not in its container under the seat in front of you at all times while on board the aircraft.
