The holidays are approaching and many families are thinking
about a new puppy for the family from Santa.
Pet shippers hear sad puppy scam stories on a daily basis. It really is heart breaking. From puppies that literally do not exist to
puppies that are poorly bred and very sick.
With all the puppy scams that we have experienced in nine years+ of pet
shipping, there is one very common thread-Internet purchasing! Yes, if you Google for a new labradoodle or
schnauzer pup you are taking a risk! No
way around it. Best advice is to talk to friends, vets, and colleagues and
purchase a puppy from someone who has already used the breeder. There is no guarantee if you randomly go
on-line, find a cute little ‘fluffy’ from an on-line breeder and decide to buy. The scammers are so smart, so quick and
ruthless! And one other thing-NEVER WIRE
MONEY TO PURCHASE A PUPPY FROM ANYONE!
Be careful and maybe even consider rescuing a dog from a local
shelter. Happy puppy shopping and Happy
Holidays! Puppy Travel

After shipping pets for almost 10
years now, I continue to be intrigued about people and their choices for the
crates they ship their pets in. The most
important thing you can do when you ship your pet is send it in a correctly
sized, sturdy crate! Some clients will
go on and on and on about how worried they are for their pets to travel in an
aircraft. They communicate valid
concerns about their safety, the processes and routings, who will handle their
pets, how long they have to wait to be claimed…..the list is endless. It never ceases to amaze that when all is
said and done…they go CHEAP on the shipping crate! They skimp on size, buy flimsy plastic
crates, ones that SNAP and do not bolt or use old ones that are completely worn
out. We picked up a pet once in a ragged old crate
that was held together with 4 zip ties..yep 4 of them! Dog weighed 55 lbs…………

Best pet shipping tip ever! Buy a good quality crate to ship your
pet! Make sure it is the correct size
for them to stand, turn and lie down in.
And, most of all let them play in it before you ship them in it! They will love you forever and so will your
pet’s travel agent!

Helping people and pets travel for going on 10 years now has been quite the wild ride! Pet travel is complicated! With every pet that moves there is always the ‘human’ part that is so interesting! Sometimes funny, sometimes crazy and occasionally sad; we have decided to put together some these ‘memorable moments’ and post them here on our Puppy Travel website occasionally. Enjoy!

We were contacted by a dog owner who had a corgi she needed picked up and shipped from Evanston Wyoming to Dallas Texas. The dog had been up in Evanston most of the summer with a pet sitter. Sounds easy enough right? As the details began to unfold, it was anything but easy. The owner had been on the summer rodeo circuit her husband- the world champion “bronking bull rider”. He was on a big winning streak they had to leave the dog in Wyoming at the last minute to head to a bunch of rodeo’s through out the western USA. The pet sitter she left the dog with as we found out had ‘bonded’ with the corgi and did not want to send it back to the owner who was now home in Texas. The pet sitter was ‘sleeping with the dog’ and loved it! The owner begged us to drive up to Evanston and get her dog and ship it to her. The pet sitter claimed the owner ‘abandoned the dog’. Working back and forth between the 2 we were finally able to ‘hand the dog off’ at the Evanston Mc Donald’s. Nice dog …mad pet sitter and happy reunited corgi pet owner!

This is one of the most common questions we are asked! Some airlines embargo checked pets during the summer months only; some allow pets to travel as ‘manifested cargo’ but put limits city/destination options as well as restricted breed rules. It is complicated! Be assured that they have these policies with concern for the safe keeping of live animals. Some airlines are committed in almost all cities winter and summer to keep your pet out of the elements and in a controlled temperature environment at all times. Other airlines do not feel they can guarantee this and therefore they issue embargos. It really is for the safe keeping of pets while in the care of the airline that polices are made.

In the United States, the FAA publishes a monthly incident report regarding Live Animals and travel. Details can be found at http://www.thirdamendment.com/animals.html

Do not arrive with an unannounced pet – call ahead! Just because you stayed at the same property with your pet before is not a guarantee that things regarding pet policies will be the same. You would hate to arrive and find out the property no longer accepts pets!

TRAVELING IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOUR DOGS!

This week I spent a tremendous amount of time trying to design a travel itinerary for an American Bull Terrier-adult dog-to travel from the USA to Germany. Delta Air Lines recently changed their rules regarding any ‘bull dog’ breed – they will not accept them if they are over six months of age or if their weight exceeds 20 lbs. Continental Airlines also has the same rule. Lufthansa has banned adult bull dog breeds and American Airlines will not accept them if outdoor temperatures exceed 75F at any point on the scheduled itinerary. My client’s dog was coming out of the Intermountain West and it is July-the warmest time of the year. With the combined airline rules regarding the breed and temperatures, we basically would have to ship the dog on Frontier Airlines to NYC and then hopefully KLM from NYC to Frankfurt. Frontier will accept the dog as cargo with a Certificate of Acclimation up to 95F. All do able but very complicated and pricey!

By the way-PET AIRWAYS is not an option on this itinerary! Are the still around? Haven’t heard a word about them since their ‘stopping service while expand’ announcement 4 or 5 months ago.
