It’s that time of year again! The time when we hit the road
in search of the perfect summer getaway. And what could make your
trip even better? Taking along your pet!

make your trip the best experience possible for you and your pet.

Preparation is important. Make sure that your accommodations
(whether a hotel or home) are accepting of your pet and her
needs. Make sure that your pet is healthy and that her shots
are up-to-date. Consider obtaining temporary ID tags that
will supply the necessary information should your pet get
lost. |

Keep your pet happy. Take along plenty of water. Stop for periodic exercise breaks. Maintain a regular feeding schedule. Pack favorite toys and blankets. |

Never leave your pet in a parked car. Studies have shown that on a warm day the temperature in a parked car can rise to 160º F in a matter of minutes, even if the windows are left slightly open. This could mean severe heat stroke, dehydration, or even death for your pet. Don't take any chances! |

Make sure that your pet is secured
while you travel. It can be dangerous and distracting
to allow your pet to roam free while you are driving. Consider
using a carrier and introduce your pet to it a few days before
you travel. Also, when traveling with larger animals, use
seat-belt type harnesses for the back seat or specially designed
security harnesses for truck beds. |

Plan for easy air travel.
Although the ideal situation is one where your pet can travel
in a carrier with you, some airlines will require that your
pet travel below. Always try to take a direct flight early
in the day so that temperatures and travel are easier for
your pet. Alert airline personnel to the fact that your pet
is on board so that they can take extra precautions during
the flight. Always retrieve your pet immediately upon landing. |

Maintain good pet health during your trip. Avoid sunburn by staying out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Though your pet's fur will protect him, he can still burn. Rub a bit of sun block on unprotected areas like the tips of his ears, the skin around his lips and the tip of his nose. Keep your pet's fur groomed to avoid tangles or extremely thick hair that may trap in heat. |
